MOFFOM Minifest follows in the path of the original Music on Film - Film on Music International Festival of Music Films, which started in Prague in 2004 with the motto "All kinds of films about all kinds of music". Documentaries have attracted a lot of attention in recent years, while blockbuster musicals and biopics too have reached the mainstream and introduced new audiences to important musical artists who in the past may have been categorized as "underground". It makes sense then that this surge in interest has occurred at a time when online music consumption has boomed and new artists are just a click away. It is certainly encouraging to see how musicians today have access to film through soundtracks and in composing original film scores. Here is a selection of 6 films that bring to life the stories of music.

Dancer in the Dark
Drama, Musical, Denmark et al. 2000, director: Lars von Trier, 140 min, German subtitles

Selma harbours a sad secret: she is losing her eyesight and her son stands to suffer the same fate if she can’t put away enough money to secure him an operation. When a desperate neighbour falsely accuses Selma of stealing his savings, the drama of her life escalates to a tragic finale.
The film’s soundtrack, released as the album “Selmasongs”, was written mainly by Björk, lyrics were by Lars Von Trier and Sjón and Mark Bell contributed to a number of songs. The film won the Palme d'Or and ‘Best Actress’ for Björk in Cannes, lots of other prizes followed.

When the Road Bends: Tales of a Gypsy Caravan
(Berlin premiere)
Documentary, USA 2006, director: Jasmine Dellal, 110 min, English subtitles
This dynamic musical documentary follows five Gypsy bands from four countries that unite for the Gypsy Caravan as they take their show around North America for a six-week tour, astounding every audience they meet. Their musical styles range from flamenco to brass band, Romanian violin to Indian folk. And with humour and soul in their voices, they celebrate the best in Gypsy culture and the diversity of the Romani people in an explosion of song and dance. As the film follows the amazing performances and behind-the-scenes action from the tour created by World Music Institute, we discover the real lives of these musicians, allowing us to understand and celebrate Romani culture and the prejudice of their shared ancestry. The documentary features performances by Macedonian diva and "Queen of the Gypsies" Esma Redzepova, traditional Indian folk troupe Maharaja, Romanian Fanfare Ciocarlia, the violin wizardry of Romanian group Taraf de Haidouks and the Antonio el Pipa Flamenco Ensemble.

Documentary, Netherlands 2008, director: David Kleijwegt, 70 min, OV (English)
A portrait of the band Low, set against the scenery of modern day America, a country that through the eyes of the musicians is nothing less than a third world country. The core of the band, that with it’s carefully composed slow songs has been well known in the alternative rock world for almost fifteen years now, is a married Mormon couple: Alan Sparhawk and Mimi Parker. Sparhawk, a neurotic doubter by nature, is the main character of this seventy minute movie about religion, violence, questions of conscience and – be it concealed or not – madness, that can also be seen as a touching love story. Director David Kleijwegt will be present at the screening.

The result is a snapshot of life on the road with one of the most exciting live bands in the world, and features their friends including James Murphy (LCD Soundsystem), Erol Alkan, Tiga, Justice, Busy P, So-Me, Peaches, Klaxons and many more in interview, as well as behind-the-scenes footage, and LOTS of music.

Call for music-oriented film and documentary projects in financing stage

Ever since the invention of cinematography back in the 1900’s, music has always been a critical element in film. One century later, music and film are still the source of inspiration for each other with an explosion of films on musical topics (from biopics to music documentaries) and with music being not only one artistic element of a film but also an important part of its marketing strategy.

To discuss these and other issues around film and music, Just Temptation is organising the Music on Film/Film on Music (MOFFOM) Minifest & Market which will take place in Berlin on the original dates of the now cancelled Popkomm international music market. This event will include both a market part open to film and music professionals as well as a mini festival part targeting the broader audience of film and music aficionados.

The market part of the MOFFOM will take place in Berlin on Thursday, September 17th, 2009 and will include a co-production market for music-oriented film and documentary projects in financing stage. 5 production companies from various European countries will present a music-oriented film or documentary project to potential co-production partners from Germany. Music producers and TV buyers will also take part in this market.

Film producers of selected projects will have the opportunity to pitch their project to potential co-producers. Furthermore, the organisers will cover the hotel costs for the night of Wednesday, September 16th, 2009.

Just Temptation Film Music Workshops at Cannes Film Festival – May 2009

The soundtrack is usually a neglected aspect of film production. The lack of time and money prevents film producers from effectively using music in their films. Yet, film music can be a fantastic tool for achieving both artistic and marketing goals when well orchestrated with low cost solutions.

Just Temptation focuses on bringing music to the content industry. The company is a joint venture between the film financing consultancy peacefulfish and music composer/supervisor Marc Collin (Nouvelle Vague, Perfect Kiss Label). Just Temptation offers consulting services, investment and supervision in soundtrack production. Just Temptation offers solutions for marketing, promotion and digital distribution of film music. Just Temptation is also a partner of the Popkomm exhibition (Sept 16-18, 2009) in Berlin offering a range of market facilities to the music and film industries.

In partnership with the Cannes Market, Just Temptation is offering 2 workshops on the opportunities and challenges involving investment in soundtracks. The workshops will give film composers and producers the opportunity to discuss issues like marketing, distribution and investment opportunities. We will present the Just Temptation business model and financing opportunities for original soundtrack production.

The workshops will take place at the Cinema de la Plage Pavillon with the support of Music Export Norway, Music Export Denmark and South East Media Network.

The participants will receive answers to the  following questions:
What does the current soundtrack market look like? How to produce an effective low budget soundtrack? What are the key success factors for soundtrack production and distribution? How to create a music-based marketing buzz around a film release?

Each workshop will focus on the specifics of one country and one topic. Access is free of charge with a limited number of seats.

FINANCING FOR ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK
Just Temptation and its financial partners are looking for feature film projects to invest in original soundtrack for shares in publishing and production rights. Aware of the fact that film producers often lack the budget for film music and then miss the relative film marketing opportunities, we decided to provide financing support for original soundtrack production and supervision. Our aim is to create and supervise the production, the distribution and the marketing of your soundtrack to enhance artistic beauty of your film while improving the visibility of the film release.

To learn more about the selection criteria, please visit our financing section.

SOUND ON SIGHT @ RIFF 08 - October 2 & 3
The frontier between the music the film industries is not clear anymore with the emergence of an “iPod” generation of film directors and spectators that are more and more interested in watching the history of their music idols on the silver screen. Aware of this deep trend and given Iceland's reputation for music, the Reykjavik International Film Festival decided to dedicate two days of the festival to film & music issues. Developed in association with JUST TEMPTATION and peacefulfish, the event will encapsulate master classes, panels and workshops along with a music-driven film market, held in connection to the festival.
For more information about the event, please visit the RIFF website.
